Today we had our Character Trait Assembly where we celebrate the different traits throughout the year at GBPS. This month the focus was on citizenship. We had two recipients of the class award. Each student has demonstrated a true respect for the other students in the class and they have shown many ways to be a good citizen in the classroom.
Mathletics is a program that we are very lucky to have at our school, and it provides a great chance for students to practice their multiplication and division skills at home! We have it, so let's use it! If you need a login reminder, please let me know and we can send around a password update.
http://www.mathletics.ca/ In class we have worked through our first week of multiplication. Students are 'doubling' their knowledge and enjoying their 'times!'
At home practice of multiplication charts would be helpful. Remember if you can add, you can multiply! Grade 4's and 5's are officially multiplying their knowledge... so to speak. Today Grade 4's learned how to use doubling to multiply, while the Grade 5's practiced multiplying with tens.
Today we celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by discussing a brief history of the issues of the time. Students then wrote a fictional letter to Mr. King asking questions and making comments about his journey. We were very interested to hear how different life was not very long ago.
We have jumped right back in to the school routine this January! Around the school we are loving the winter weather, trying to stay warm outside, and enjoying the different topics we explore in class.
UPDATES: Students have just wrapped up the measurement unit in class today by finishing their Time Quizzes. We will be moving into our final first term unit - Multiplication and Division. Students can be supported at home by practising these operations in real world contexts like "If we are going to build a snow man and it takes 3 big snow balls to make one, how many snow balls would it take to make 7 snowmen?" Or it could be job related like "I get $5 for every drive that I shovel. How many driveways do I need to shovel to make atlas $40?" In Language students have been working on writing their thoughts and opinions in paragraph form, and including all necessary parts of the paragraph. They have also been trying to convince their audience in their persuasive writing pieces! Some interesting topics include: "We should use a bake sale to raise money for cancer." "We should improve the music program at school." "We should have outdoor schooling." Look back for more updates to come on what's happening in 2016! |
